Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) happens when plaque builds up in the arteries leading to the legs and arms. This plaque narrows the arteries and limits blood flow. Pieces of plaque can break off and travel to other parts of the body, blocking small blood vessels. This can cause damage to organs like the brain, leading to a stroke.
Carotid Arterial Disease
Carotid artery disease happens when plaque builds up in the carotid arteries in the neck. This causes the arteries to narrow, which is called stenosis. It can also lead to complete blockage, known as occlusion. The plaque is made up of cholesterol, fat, and calcium. High blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, and high cholesterol can raise your risk. Carotid artery disease tends to develop slowly over time. The first sign is often a stroke or TIA (temporary lack of blood flow to the brain).
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)
The aorta is the large blood vessel carrying blood from the heart. In some people, the lower aorta can balloon out and form an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). This weak bulge can rupture and cause life-threatening bleeding. AAAs are common, especially in older men over 65. They are the 15th leading cause of death. Catching AAAs early allows doctors to monitor or repair the aorta before it ruptures. This helps prevent fatal bleeding.
Renal Arterial Disease
The renal arteries supply blood to the kidneys. Like other arteries, they can become clogged with plaque - cholesterol, fat, and calcium build-up. This condition is called renal artery disease. It is usually caused by atherosclerosis, which is the hardening of arteries. Catching and treating renal artery disease early on is important to preserve kidney function and prevent complications like stroke and heart attack. Controlling risk factors like high cholesterol helps prevent the arteries from clogging in the first place.
Venous Disease/Deep Vein Thrombosis
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that forms in a large vein, usually in the leg. It affects over 2.5 million Americans each year. A DVT can break off and travel to the lungs, blocking blood flow. This pulmonary embolism can be fatal. DVT forms when blood slows down and clumps together in a vein. The clot can block blood flow and cause swelling, pain, and discoloration in the leg. However, DVT is not always symptomatic.
At Arizona Endovascular Center, our in-house vascular lab is a non-invasive testing facility that utilizes ultrasound to address specific blood vessel problems, including carotid arteries in the neck, which feed the brain and arteries and veins of the arms and legs. These exams usually take 30-60 minutes and are safe and painless.
